As expected by administrators, the Board of Trustees on Nov. 1 approved a new Master's degree in Public Policy at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management will offer a Master's degree in Public Policy next year.
The MPP is a two-year program teaching students to "evaluate, create and recommend policy options to solve complex social problems," according to the proposal.
Prof. Andrew Hahn (Heller), the program's director, said the new program is "a stepping stone to law school, to medical school, to advanced training in a doctoral program."
Hahn said undergraduates have already approached him about the new program.
"They're looking in their own community and discovering how exciting this MPP will be," he said.
The Heller School is promoting the MPP to special public interest groups and others who work within the public policy field, Hahn said.
With the addition of the MPP, the Heller School has four Masters programs and one Ph.D program. Consistently ranked as one of the top graduate schools in public policy in the country, the school also recently dedicated a new $13.8-million building.
"Hopefully…we will have some Brandeis undergraduates interested in this program who have an interest in creating widespread social change, because that's what knowledge of policy and improving policies makes possible."
