To the Editor:

One of the little-overlooked facts about Shreeya Sinha's '09 election to the presidency last week in a crowded field of candidates by an overwhelming margin is the strong support she received from current Union President Alison Schwartzbaum '08. Of course, Sinha won on her own merits, but her close partnership with Schwartzbaum is one of the reasons so many students felt confident electing Sinha early on. Yet, in your most recent editorial "Dos and Don'ts for president-elect Shreeya Sinha" you attacked Schwartzbaum's presidency as untransparent and unresponsive to student needs (March 27 issue). The Justice's attacks on Schwartzbaum's presidency are completely off-base and out of touch with the overwhelming satisfaction students have with her tenure as president.

The notion that Alison has not been transparent is patently untrue. You need only log onto the Union Web site to read Schwartzbaum's detailed weekly project reports, where she gives comprehensive information on every task she has done for the Union for the past two-and-a-half years. Saying you are confident that Sinha can "bring the Union to where it should be" is an underhanded insult directed at a president whom I have seen work to the point of exhaustion advocating for students' needs and fighting for their interests.

The Union has been doing a fine job, and that is why students rightfully voted to continue the legacy left by Schwartzbaum's predecesor, Jenny Feinberg '07, and Schwartzbaum herself by voting for Sinha, the candidate supported by the two former presidents. The Justice's attacks on Schwartzbaum are nothing more than petty politicking of the meanest sort. An honest assessment of Schwartzbaum's tenure will indicate that she has been a wonderful president, and I hope that after her final State of the Union next week, the Justice will report those facts with journalistic integrity.
