Starving Artists, the singing sensation that touts itself as "Brandeis' fun-loving coed a cappella group," performed its semester show Friday night, much to the pleasure and appreciation of the crowded Slosberg Recital Hall. The show included a farewell to seniors Becca Reiman, Logan Jerger and Jenny El-Far, who debuted their senior solos, and a celebration of the continuing spirit of SA, with performances of crowd favorites such as Tally Hall's "The Bidding," as performed with soloist Josh Mervis '08.
Drew Sambol '09 kicked off the night with a heartfelt rendition of Madonna's "Open Your Heart to Me." Sambol's strong and lovely voice reverberated through the crowded hall, setting the tone for a slew of equally strong performances. Neal Ludevig '09 quickly became another crowd favorite with the first solo performance of his SA career, as he blasted through an energetic rendition of Paul Simon's "Kodachrome." And although it seemed misplaced in the pajama-clad first act, Olivia Mell's '09 "Fever" sizzled as always.
The second act was marked by costume change-from pajamas to black and red formal wear-and proved as satisfying as the first. Gavi Young '09 performed an especially theatrical rendition of No Doubt's "Spiderwebs," looking suspiciously at her fellow Starving Artists as though, as the song goes, they were the culprits behind her romantic entanglement.
And Ross Brown '10 entranced the audience with a confident, soulful performance of Sister Hazel's "All for You," a song that had members of the audience grinning as they mouthed the words along with the effervescent Brown. Brown's solo, his first with the group, was a tantalizing taste of what the future might hold for SA superfans.
Richa Sahay '09 blew the audience away with her stunning and confident performance of Lauren Hill's version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." Sahay's voice was one of the smoothest on the stage, and she belted the lyrics with a passion that can only be shared with the most lovesick. Sahay strode across the stage in a black and silver shimmering dress, filling the auditorium with her presence.
