Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer said a search for a new Jewish chaplain has been underway since Rabbi Allan Lehmann resigned last May.
Though the search, which is being conducted by Assistant Dean of Student Life Jamele Adams and Catholic chaplain Father Walter Cuenin is only in its "preliminary stages," Sawyer hopes to have someone in place by the beginning of the year.
"We hope to have someone for the start of the year, but if not, the feeling is that we will manage with 'substitutes' until a permanent Jewish chaplain is found," Sawyer wrote in an e-mail to the Justice.
After serving the Brandeis community for seven years, Lehmann, 59, has accepted a position at Hebrew College in Newton, a transdenominational seminar.
