Several officials in the Department of Student Life received promotions this month, Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer announced in an e-mail last Wednesday.
Jamele Adams and Maggie Balch were named associate deans of student life, a step up from their previous positions as assistant deans of student life, posts they have held since 2005.
Sawyer said that since Alwina Bennett left her position as assistant dean of student life last May, Adams and Balch have taken on programs she used to oversee. Bennett was named Assistant Provost for Graduate Student Affairs.
"They both lead fairly significant teams of offices," Sawyer said Monday.
Adams oversees the Intercultural Center, The Department of Student Activities, the chaplaincy and community service.
In addition to managing the Department of Residence Life and the Department of Student Development and Conduct, Balch now leads Orientation activities.
"We are already seeing good results and potential from that move," Sawyer wrote in his announcement.
Balch and Adams didn't return an e-mail Monday evening, requesting comment.
Robert Berlin, who has served as Director of the Psychological Counseling Center for around 20 years, has been promoted to Senior Director, "the ultimate title in the counseling world," Sawyer said. As Senior Director, Berlin will continue to hire new staff, run programs and counsel patients. He was out of the office Monday and Tuesday and unable to give comment.
The title change has been long in coming, Sawyer said. "He's been leading quietly and effectively."
