LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Donors and Jimmy Carter

To the Editor:
We write in response to your statement "Throughout the torrid affair of Carter-Dershowitz-Pipes-Finkelstein and (sarcastic) "oh my," this editorial page and the campus at large continued to advocate for "free speech" and dynamic discourse. Hosting this range of speakers shows the University's even handed approach to debate" ("The record speaks for itself", August 28th issue).
We have been donors to Brandeis University for many years since we set up a scholarship fund in the memory of our son, Jeffrey Alan King. I have been an active member and supporter of Brandeis University National Woman's Committee for 20 years.
Your editorial has added insult to injury! President Carter's book and speech at Brandeis were not about "free speech," We believe that Justice Brandeis would agree with us that one does not shout fire in a crowded auditorium, theater or gymnasium. This issue is not about "debate." Carter would not agree to do that.
Alan Dershowitz spoke only after Carter left the room, and only a small number of students remained to hear his words of truth after Carter's outright lies, one of which even Carter admitted to putting in his book.
How could a university that was founded and continues to be supported by the Jewish community of the United States give a stage to Carter to spew his lies and promote his biased book? I expected more from the "so-called-intelligence" of students and professors at Brandeis to see through Carter's plan. This experience and your editorial has had a devastating affect on our thoughts and plans for Brandeis.

Are the Kings paying for buildings or contributing to the university? The old saw about the naif who has just toured Oxford, had each building pointed out to him, but then asks, "But where is the University?" comes (aptly) to mind. (Continued…)

Buildings are where the University happens. Even in today's internet teaching era, buildings are where the servers are. The famous quote about the academy being a student at one end of a log and a teacher at the other still requires a log. (Continued…)
