With just under a minute left in the second overtime of the women's soccer team's game against Clark University Saturday, midfielder Melissa Gorenkoff '10 took her second shot on goal. Cougars' sophomore goalie Joanna Clark saved it, just like the first one, and it represented one of several missed scoring opportunities by both teams in the 1-1 tie.

The Judges are now 3-1-1 on the season following a 2-0 victory over Bridgewater State College Wednesday.

" [Clark University] had opportunities to score, and they didn't capitalize on [them], but they could have," coach Denise Dallamora said. "And we controlled pretty much probably 80 percent of the game, but we didn't put it in the back of the net."

After a quiet start, the Judges jumped ahead 1-0 in the 26th minute. Rookie midfielder Sofia Vallone '11, who had entered the game as a substitute just six minutes earlier, scored on a shot from 15 yards away from the goal.

"It's really nice to be able to help out the team as a freshman," Vallone said. "Our captains really tell us all the time that it's not about whether or not you start, but it's about what kind of impact you can make in general."

Dallamora said Vallone's goal energized the team. While the Judges didn't score during the next 56 minutes, they outshot Clark 8-1.

"I think [Vallone's goal] pumped us up," Dallamora said. "We really had a very slow start. We were playing a lot of kickball in the beginning, and then we finally settled down and played a much better possession game, and we had some opportunities."

Still, Brandeis' hopes of winning were lost when Clark freshman forward Kristen Murrone took advantage of a gap in the midfield and connected for her second goal of the season in the 82nd minute.

"They just got numbers up on us and took a piece off from the outside, and that was that," Dallamora said. "You make a mistake sometimes and you get away with it, and other times you can't, and that was one time we couldn't."

Rosenzweig, who has played in goal for every minute of the Judges' first five games, credited Murrone with taking advantage of a favorable situation.
