To the Editor:
Sarah Bernes's op-ed, "The community needs to educate itself to help prevent suicide" ( Sept. 18 issue) was on-target and very much appreciated. As Ms. Bernes touched upon, all too often suicidal feelings are stigmatized by the media and society in general, despite the fact that such feelings are in fact quite common, especially in the college-age demographic.
One thing that was not touched upon in this article was the availability of resources for students on the Brandeis campus and in the Boston area, beyond the Mailman Counseling Center. On campus, in addition to the numerous professional staff in the Department of Student Life (from community advisors to deans) who are willing and able to help, the Brandeis Counseling and Rape Crisis Hotline-(781) 736-TALK-offers confidential and anonymous counseling every night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Professionally trained peer counselors are available during those hours to discuss any issue on the minds of Brandeis undergraduates, including suicidal feelings and how to help friends who are thinking of suicide. Furthermore, Samaritans of Boston offers a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline at (617) 247-0220. We hope it is clear to all in the Brandeis community that those thinking of suicide are not alone, and we thank Ms. Bernes for her excellent column.
