To the Editor:
The editorial board called for Union Secretary Michael Goldman's '09 removal from office due to allegations made about his conduct during the previous election cycles ("Impeach Michael Goldman," Oct. 2 issue).
Let me be very clear. What Goldman did was wrong. But Goldman's actions did not sway any election whatsoever. The entire executive board recognizes that, as they did not call for the elections to be revoked. And Goldman's actions certainly were not unconstitutional. The senate, after an all-night session decided to unanimously censure Goldman, which was a very appropriate response.
The Justice editorial fails to realize that running the elections is only one facet of the Secretary's job.
First of all, however, Goldman has done an exemplary job running fair elections, open to all. In fact, Goldman cares so much about fair elections that he held a second candidates' meeting to accommodate people who failed to show up at the first one including Village Senator Michael Kerns '08. Goldman was under no obligation to do so but did so to ensure a more inclusive and fair race.
If Kerns is calling for Goldman's resignation, then he must recognize without Goldman's generosity he would not have such a pedestal to manipulate his friends to launch a personal vendetta against Goldman, an extremely hardworking, dedicated and fair Union official.
During his distinguished career, Goldman helped lobby for a Brookline shuttle and planned wonderful pride programs for his class.
Now, as secretary, Goldman is doing the nitty-gritty that Union officials and club leaders need. Goldman orders office supplies, oversees card access, takes notes at meetings, etc.
Let's let Goldman go back to serving the needs of the student body. His time would be better spent there.
