After a season that included several high points, including a school-record sixth-place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England championships Oct. 7, the golf team ended its fall season on a downer at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships last Monday and Tuesday.

The Judges finished in a tie for 30th place of 42 teams at the tournament in Brewster, Mass. with an aggregate score of 663.

Dan Shani '08 placed first on the team, shooting a nine-over-par 81 in both of his rounds. He was followed by Charles Sacks '11 and Jeff Stein '08, who each shot a two-day total of 166. Lee Bloom '10 finished fourth on the team with a two-day score of 169, while Alex Botwick '08 came in last place with a two-day score of 171, one week after shooting a round of 75 in the team's Oct. 17 loss to Rhode Island College.

The University of Rhode?Island won the tournament with an aggregate score of 600, while Salem State College, with a fourth-place finish, placed top among Division III schools. The Judges' finish placed them in a tie for 13th among Division III schools with St. Joseph's College.

Tough weather conditions, which included 30-mph winds, plagued the Judges throughout the competition.

"We lucked out, but the conditions were rough," Shani said.

"The team struggled; it was more of an issue of a few especially bad holes rather than overall play."

Shani struggled early last Tuesday, shooting four over par on the first five holes he played. He then proceeded to go one-under par on his next six holes, firing birdies on No. 12 and No. 15, but said he was still frustrated about getting off to a bad start both days of the tournament.

Bloom played well last Tuesday until a quadruple bogey on the 12th hole, which turned a fairly decent round into just an average one.

Stein was also cruising along until a bad shot on the eighth green led to consecutive double bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes.
