The Justice

How prophetic, that in the thick of the writers' strike that has strangled Hollywood, BTV would literally be rolling out the red carpet for the premier of their new series, Slice 'n 'Deis. Determined to celebrate no matter who showed up, the cast and crew of the show bubbled with excitement as waves of attendees streamed into the Golding Auditorium Monday night. Inside the auditorium, a disclaimer had been hastily written on the chalkboard stating "BTV does not support bestiality, sleeping in class or marijuana usage." Clearly, Slice 'n 'Deis would not be appealing to the highest echelons of tasteful humor.

Before the tape rolled, the show's creator, Arun Narayanan '10, spoke to the audience, outlining the vision he hatched last semester. "I wanted to create something fun, something that students would watch," he told the crowd. Though the pilot on display (titled "Sex with Dolphins") took most of the semester to complete, Narayanan assured the audience that they would be pumping out an episode each month by the spring.

The episode, which was more a collection of skits than a linear story, featured actors Alex Gaman '09, Diana Benlevy '09, Ted Levin '10, Josh Reuss '10 and Gdaly Berlin '10 taking a highly entertaining approach to everyday Brandeis dilemmas. The opening sequence set the humor bar high, with the cast sitting in a common room, playing a drinking game to the Windows logo that now occupies the old BTV cable channel. The crowd reacted with great enthusiasm, pleased to see original, high-quality humor that was geared exclusively toward the Brandeis experience. Other sequences included a drug induced journey to Einstein Bros and a discussion on the various methods of staying awake during afternoon classes via public masturbation.

Though far from a professional production, there is a natural chemistry between the actors that shines through even the shakiest camera work, proving that good writing will prevail, regardless of how big the budget is. With most popular network shows on hold or close to it, a production like Slice 'n 'Deis, reminds us of the value that underground and campus media hold.

Beaming with pride after the show, BTV President Avi Swerdlow '10 expressed his great satisfaction with the premier. Speaking after the viewing, Swerdlow told the Justice "I am amazed and so happy. I think it was very well received. It's fucking hilarious. It's really good for the future of BTV."
