The Brandeis University Alumni Association announced the opening of its new business center last Thursday in New York City at the Brandeis House, which hosts a variety of University-sponsored cultural activities and fundraising initiatives.
The new center was funded by the Brandeis House Committee and Friends of Brandeis House and includes two new work stations with computers and printers on the House's seldom-used ground level, which also features a TV and pool table for recreational use.
Additionally, on the House's "parlor floor," visitors can now enjoy a new coffee bar, comfortable sofas and local newspapers.
The House, which is located on 12 East 77th St. in New York and was bequeathed to the University by the Spingold family, is underutilized during the daytime, wrote alumna Jane Paley Price '69 in an e-mail to the Justice.
To determine how the House might best serve alumni, the Brandeis House Committee conducted a nationwide alumni survey, which found that a business center and coffee lounge are the two strongest recommendations.
"The largest number of respondents wanted a center where they could prepare résumés and do business-related activities," Price wrote.
Current students and alumni alike are invited to visit the House, now open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., free of charge. Only a call ahead is required for security purposes and to alert the House staff. "We hope current students will visit when in the area," Price wrote.
Future plans for the house include refurbishments to provide for prospective applicants and more fundraising programs. "In addition to the wonderful programs so many of us already enjoy, we plan to showcase the house to prospective students and their families," said Allen Alter '71, an Emmy Award-winning senior producer of 48 Hours Mystery at CBS and Alumni Association president as of last summer, on the alumni Web site.
"For now, our goal is to make it 'a home away from home' for the entire Brandeis family," Price wrote. "We believe it will especially benefit new alums who are entering the job market."
