Approval of budget tabled until next week

Student Union Treasurer Choon Woo Ha '08 presented the Student Union's budget to the Union Senate. After senators expressed displeasure with what they considered the small size of the Senate discretionary fund, Ha voided that proposal and introduced a new budget with a higher Senate discretionary fund. In order to work toward reconciling competing interests of the Senate and the Union executive board, the Senate tabled discussion of the budget until next week.
Senator for the Class of 2009 Julia Sferlazzo reported that she was researching peer institutions' policies on free testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
The Senate chartered the Brandeis chapter of Health Occupations Students of America.
The Senate tabled a bylaw change specifying that the Union president appoint Senate committee chairs at the end of each semester so Union members can begin working on projects and drawing up budgets by the beginning of next semester. Discussion on this proposal will continue next week.
The Senate also tabled a bylaw change that would give the Diversity committee chairperson more discretion about the details of the committee's work.
The Senate tabled a Senate Money Resolution of $45 for an online map of Boston showcasing locations recommended by Brandeis students and $50 for an ice cream social for midyears.
The Senate chartered the Brandeis Humanists club and the Real Estate Club.
The Senate recognized Financially Responsible Endeavor to Serve Humanity Water, which aims to mobilize students to design water purification systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
Director of Union Affairs Jason Gray '10 said he will recommend a price change for the cost of replacing a WhoCard to Vice President of Campus Operations Mark Collins, after conducting a survey among the student body. The new price would be $8. It is currently $20.
Union Director of Campus Life Christina Khemraj '09 reported that 67.2 percent of students who answered a survey on social life would be comfortable with extending quiet hours until 2 a.m.
