Liquid Latex is giving up its funding from the Student Union Finance Board for its March 20 show, the show's co-coordinator Dianne Ma '09 said.
This semester, the Student Union treasurer has implemented a trial policy in which the admissions to events that are funded by the Student Activities Fee, a part of every student's tuition bill, is free of charge for all Brandeis undergraduates.
Initially, Ma said, the group had intended to request $ 4,500 from the F-Board. Liquid Latex made the decision not to request funding on the last day of Regular Marathon, during which clubs can request funding for the current semester, she said, after deciding that the club had enough money in its account to fund the event.
Ma said the club's goal had always been to become self-sustainable in order to avoid going through F-Board in the future. Because of the F-Board trial policy this semester, she said this would be a good time to see how much money the club could raise on its own. "We figured this would be a good time for us to … see how much money we make from charging for the show and see how sustainable we can be." Tickets will cost $7 for seating and $5 for standing. "We have the money so why not use it," Ma said.
"I think the [free events policy] could potentially be good," Ma said, adding that she "did not quite understand F-Board's intentions," and wondered whether F-Board would be able to fund all events if the policy continued beyond this semester.
Finance Board Chairman Max Wallach '09 said he supported the decision and explained the theory behind the new policy. "The issue we wanted to address is charging students twice: first through tuition and then through ticket prices," Wallach said. "And since that's not the case in this situation, they are fully within their rights to charge ticket prices, and I don't think students are getting double-charged for that."
He emphasized that the Student Union sees club's fundraising money as the property of clubs itself and under their full discretion. In a recent interview with the Justice, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy said she saw club fundraising as a part of a troubling trend of rollover funds accumulating under the Student Union's watch.
