To the Editor:

I want to shed some light on the situation regarding bringing back Sexually Transmitted Infections testing to this campus ("Administration and Student Union not in same place on free STI testing," April 8 issue). In meetings with Jean Eddy, senior vice president of students and enrollment, I received much positive feedback and an assurance that the idea will be looked into further and pushed for when the contract is renegotiated this summer. No one can be sure if having free STI testing is a definite possibility until that time; it seems that everyone is really on the same page.

Further, to clarify, there is currently only one day of HIV/AIDS-only testing, held once a semester, run through the Students for Global AIDS Campaign. This testing is only done on approximately 100 students; the group even had to turn students away this past semester because they did not have enough resources. Having once a semester testing for only one kind of STI, is misrepresented in the article as "events already on campus by clubs that offer free testing" does not fulfill the same great demand for full STI testing for the Brandeis undergraduate population.

Emphasis on this initiative should not be on a contrived controversy between the administration and a student demand, but on working to bring back to Brandeis a service that would better the greater campus sexual health.
