Apparently, this week "singer" Ashlee Simpson and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz tied the knot in some backyard after only weeks of puppy love, smiling their way through confirming engagement rumors and coyly brushing off questions of pregnancy.
But really, when you think about it, it seems unlikely that the demure 23-year-old is a mama-to-be. What about the proximity of wedding to engagement, you ask? Well, I'm sure it was their unflinching love and devotion that led to their rather speedy nuptials. Others may believe that it was the urgency of fitting everything in before the baby bump rears its ugly-I mean, adorable-head.
But nay, why be so negative? After all, Simpson and Wentz are representative of a different kind of love, an emo kind of love. They have different standards, different courtship rituals-they are revolutionizing what we think and know about each other. Take for example, the trademark emo hoodie. Some may blow it off as a passing fashion trend, a time in our culture when sloppiness and dark color patterns are being celebrated, but take a closer look, and you will find it is a powerful symbol of love. The male, adorned with black skinny jeans, a lip ring and the ever-popular scowl, uses his hoodie to catch the eye of his beloved, summoning her as he walks away making little eye contact. The female, in response, wearing almost identical attire to her male counterpart, follows the hooded, unpleasant-looking youngster, and the rest, as Simpson and Wentz prove, is a series of tight-lipped responses, a steadily unhealthy attachment to one another and a quickie ceremony. This is love in the current subculture. Embrace it, enjoy it, envy it. Ashlee and Pete do, and I'm sure their child, born not premature, though suspiciously only seven months after the ceremony, will.
