Nicole Chabot, the assistant director of student activities at Wesleyan University will enter the new position of associate director of the Department of Student Activities in mid-June.
The position will involve planning events, advising clubs and overseeing the Student Activities advisors, Stephanie Grimes, director of student activities, said.
The new position is an upgrade of the position of assistant director, Grimes explained. Former Assistant Director Sarah Bordeleau left her three-year position at Brandeis for a position at the American Program Bureau in Newton.
Chabot will report to Grimes and oversee both Student Activities advisors, Rebecca Lehrhoff and Sarah Richardson, Grimes said.
Chabot's work will involve assisting groups during the One-Stop process by which clubs seek advice for planning events, which, Grimes added, will be renamed Jumpstart next fall.
In an expansion of the old positions' responsibilities, Chabot will advise the Student Services Bureau and help plan Fall Fest, tasks, which had previously been solely under Grimes' oversight, Grimes explained. The selection committee consisted of Student Activities Staff and staff members from other departments that work with the Student Activities and received input from students, Grimes said.
Grimes said that Student Events members met with each candidate separately because the associate director will be one of their advisors.
"I just really liked her," Student Events co-president Ilyssa Adler '09 said. "She came in very off-guard. … She was the only [candidate] that took off her jacket, got really into the conversation, asked everything about the school, laughed with us, wanted so much be a part of what were doing."
Grimes said the committee felt that Chabot had the best programming and advising skills. As a staff member at Wesleyan, she encountered a comparable student body to that at Brandeis, Grimes added. In a further assessment, Grimes pointed out that Chabot had background both in student organizational and university-wide programming as well as experience in the area of social justice.
Chabot said she is excited to learn about Brandeis and looks forward to getting to know people here.
"I think that's really important to me, feeling connected to the folks that I'm working with, whether that be students or staff, and to really just … get a feel for the community of Brandeis and let that inform my work," she said.
