Jeff Hauser, Shulman's campaign manager, said Shulman makes the analogy that, just as a judge must recuse himself from a case in which he or she cannot be an impartial judge, Shulman won't take money from corporations that do business with his committees.
His network of supporters includes New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and previous New Jersey Gov. Dick Codey, Sens. Robert Menendez and Frank Laudenberg, senior citizens and youth who have been helping out as interns in his New Jersey campaign office.
Shulman also said he has had "great support from Brandeis alumni" who have co-hosted recent campaign events.
Hauser said the campaign will hold a "college invasion" the weekend of Sept. 27 in which students can come to the New Jersey campaign office and work on the campaign's "innovative Internet strategy," which includes YouTube videos about Shulman and issues on which he is working.
One of Brandeis' Campus Captains for the Campaign Tamar Ariel '10 said she "fell in love with [the campaign]" after learning about Shulman's background and stance on various issues.
Ariel is hoping to get Brandeis students involved with the campaign by making phone calls and urging students from Shulman's district to vote for him.As of June, Shulman's campaign had raised almost $600,000, Shulman said.
"The more [voters] know about [me] the more likely they are to vote for me," Shulman said.
