Student Union President Jason Gray '10 swore in Noam Shuster '11 as senator-at-large. The Union Judiciary issued an injunction last spring halting her swearing-in after former Senator-at-Large Andrew Brooks '09 contested the election results. He asserted that Shuster broke election rules as a write-in candidate. In May, the Union Judiciary ruled after a hearing that write-in candidates cannot be held to the same standard as other candidates and lifted the injunction.
Gray said he will meet with Athletics Director Sheryl Sousa this week to discuss three bids from vendors to build the new weight room.
East Quad Senator Tamar Ariel '10 reported that she was interested in working on possibilities for a cappella groups to receive Union funding in spite of their exclusivity.
Senator for the Class of 2010 Paul Balik reported that he was interested in picking up a project to organize bike rentals on campus started by former Vice President Michael Kerns '09.
Senator-at-Large Justin Sulsky '09 reported that he reapplied to be on the Brandeis dining committee to express concerns about lay-offs in Sherman and improvements to the kosher side of the dining hall.
Racial Minority Senator Kamarin Lee '11 reported that the Transitional Year Program Lab has been renovated with new couches and new computers.
The Senate recognized the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a chapter of a national non-profit group that provides scholarships, networking and service opportunities for students with a grade point average above 3.4.
Union Treasurer Max Wallach '09 reported that the Student Union has a contract with a new provider for the campus newspaper program that offers the New York Times, the Boston Globe and USA Today to undergraduate students. Starting next semester, he said students can swipe their identification cards in a newspaper box to receive the free newspapers.
