WSOCCER: Judges capture season opener

Just 28 minutes, 40 seconds into her college career, forward Izabella Miranda '12 collected her first assist on a goal by midfielder Sofia Vallone '11, giving the women's soccer team a 2-0 lead against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in their season-opening game.
But that was just the beginning for the rookie, who scored the first goal of her college career less than 30 minutes later, which served as the final goal of the Judges' 4-0 victory over MIT.
"I was expecting to play [in the game] for a little bit but not as much as I played," said Miranda, who came off the bench in the 20th minute. "As a player you always want to expect to score, but I didn't think I was going to do as much … as I did in the game."
The last time the two teams met, the Judges eliminated the Engineers with a 1-0 win in the 2007 Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinals.
"Definitely it was a great way to start off the year," defender Taryn Martiniello '11 said. "It starts us on a good foot."
Rookie Alanna Torre '12, who played all 90 minutes, also scored during her Brandeis debut. Torre's goal came just 13:53 into the contest when she headed in a Martiniello corner kick to give the Judges a 1-0 lead.
"[Miranda and Torre] stepped up and they've been working really hard," captain and defender Meredith Milstein '09 said. "And I think that [their performance against MIT] kind of proves to everyone that they deserve to be here."
Torre's goal was followed by Vallone's goal in the 29th minute, giving the Judges a 2-0 advantage by halftime. Forward Tiffany Pacheco '11 scored an unassisted goal just 44 seconds into the second half to put Brandeis ahead 3-0, and Miranda scored the final goal of the afternoon when she took a crossing pass from last year's All-University Athletic Association forward Melissa Gorenkoff '10 and shot one past MIT senior goalkeeper Stephanie Brenman.
Coach Denise Dallamora said Gorenkoff, the only upperclassman to score a point for the Judges on Saturday, responded well to MIT's physical play.
