New dining options created

The Provisions on Demand Market recently implemented the "Demand Fair Pricing" policy to ensure fair prices are maintained in the market. Dining Services also introduced a new meal plan for students not required to have a full meal plan, according to Director of Dining Services Michael Newmark.
Newmark wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that the Demand Fair Pricing policy requires that the customer provide proof in the form of a receipt demonstrating that the Village Market or the Family Market, both in Waltham, sells a particular item for a lower cost than the P.O.D. Market. Students will receive P.O.D. Market store credit equaling the difference between the two prices.
Dining Services introduced this policy as a result of the common opinion amongst students that food prices on campus are too high, Newmark wrote in an e-mail to the Justice. He explained that the Demand Fair Pricing policy will allow students to see that prices on campus are actually on par with if not lower then those in the Waltham area.
Restrictions do apply to this policy, however. David Bunker, a P.O.D. Market employee, explained that the items sold at other locations cannot be items that are on sale and cannot be items sold at large stores such as Hannaford or CVS.
Newmark wrote in the e-mail that Dining Services will not accept receipts from the larger chain stores because Brandeis cannot compete based on the P.O.D. Market's smaller buying power and volume. The larger stores buy products in bulk and therefore receive discounts on their purchases that the P.O.D. Market cannot offer.
As stated on signs displayed in the P.O.D. Market, the Demand Fair Pricing policy shows that the market is attempting to "spend time helping [students] spend less."
Newmark also wrote in his e-mail that as a result of surveys and focus groups in which students expressed interest in a voluntary meal plan, Dining Services is now offering a new plan called The Wise Meal Plan, which is available to students who are not required to be on a full meal plan. This includes students living off-campus and those who live in residence halls that have full kitchens.
