CORRECTION: A new version of this story has been posted due to a factual error. The Justice regrets the error.
Midfielder Sofia Vallone '11, who finished fifth on the team in points last season as a rookie, said she expects to miss four to six weeks after suffering a fractured fibula and a sprained ankle in her left leg during last Saturday's victory against the University of Massachusetts at Boston.
The injury occurred when Vallone was recovering a rebound off forward Melissa Gorenkoff's '10 foot in front of the net in the 26th minute. According to coach Denise Dallamora, a UMass-Boston player kicked Vallone in the ankle while going for the ball. Vallone ended up scoring the first goal of the game on the play, but she was carted off the field at the half and sent to the hospital for X-rays.
"I just remember scoring the goal and going down in serious, serious agony. I don't even think I've screamed so loud on a field before in pain," Vallone said.
Vallone scored two goals and started all three games this season after collecting six points in her rookie campaign.
"[Vallone is] just a dominating player in the middle of the field," captain and defender Meredith Milstein '09 said after the game. "When the game gets frantic, she really helps calm the pace of the game down."
Correction: In the original story, Vallone injured herself by losing her balance in front of the net. She was actually kicked by a Umass-Boston player.
