To the Editor:
I must object to Naomi Spector's assertion that Sarah Palin challenges the foundational values of Brandeis University ("Palin lambasts Brandeis core ethos," Sept. 16 issue). Most puzzling to me is the author's belief that we should fault Palin for "injecting ideology" into a political race. Spector seems to argue that our politicians best support democracy by taking neutral positions on issues-or rather, by ignoring important matters such as abortion, gun control and religion when they aggravate our left-leaning sensibilities. It is of little surprise that Spector's discussion of Brandeis principles makes no mention of the school's motto, which apparently needs revision. I expect she'll favor my suggestion for a replacement: "Truth-only to the extent that it isn't offensive."
