Autumn brings stylish boots

Autumn brings with it many lovely changes-the crisp air, Starbucks' pumpkin spice latte, the crunch of leaves beneath my feet and, of course, boots. The cooler weather means putting away those fabulous gladiator sandals from this summer and finding footwear for the fall, and I do not mean Uggs.
This season brings with it an assortment of styles, and while they may seem fun, they are fleeting and unlikely to be wearable next fall. But if you are like me and can't help but embrace every wacky trend to touch down, this fall is for you. Fringe is not just for your Pocahontas Halloween costume anymore, and if this is a fashion that you think you can rock, I recommend Sam Edelman's "Uri" boot ($225), which has fringe on the boot.
Another craze taking over New York and Los Angeles is combat-inspired footwear. The Hills star, Dianne von Furstenberg employee and fashion designer Whitney Port was photographed wearing this bold trend just last week.
Gordon Steiner at Giorgio Armani says "Combat-style boots are a must-have for any fashionista or trendsetter. They can be paired with a skirt and blouse for a softer look or skinny jeans, a plaid shirt and a bomber jacket for a fiercer, tougher look."
It has also been leaked that an upcoming episode of the fashion-forward television drama Gossip Girl will feature Cuzza boots, which have a clear military inspiration. Doc Martens also makes a simple military style boot; they have no heel, so walking up the Rabb steps won't be an issue. Forever21 is selling similar boots for only $32, which won't break the bank for such a trendy item.
If you are looking for a classic pair of boots to last more than a season, there are a few things to consider.
The first is heel height. Consider how much walking you will be doing and where you want to wear your boots. I strongly recommend flat boots or a pair with a minimal heel, as they will be most comfortable and functional.
Second is material. While cheap imitations of leather and suede are rampant, these materials are utterly disposable and not worth a dime. Yes, real leather will run you a pretty penny; however, it will stand the test of time and endure significant wear and tear. Luscious suede boots are always tempting, but they will require much more upkeep than leather, which should come with a layer of protection. Purchasing a protective spray is absolutely worth it. Leather is really the only way to go. Equestrian-inspired flat leather boots are chic and practical, a must-have for a complete wardrobe. A good pair of leather boots can elevate even the most casual outfits. Jeans and a T-shirt gain a shot of sophistication when they are paired with boots instead of, say, sneakers.
Third is the actual height of the boot. Ankle boots have been hot for a few seasons now, but to weather the colder temperatures here, look for boots that can provide an extra layer of warmth on your shins. When you try boots on, you should also be sure to wear one of your favorite pairs of jeans so you can see where they fall in relation to the boots or how easily they tuck in.
Lastly, embellishments, those extra components that are a vehicle for your personal style. While gaudy buckles and zippers are flashy and tempting, for investment boots, I would urge you to just say no and consider some minimal options, such as Tory Burch's Jackson Leather riding boots.
Boots can add a certain ferocity and pizazz to even the most basic outfits, so grab your purse and hit the mall running to find the perfect boots.
