Top performances from classmates Kerwin Vega '11 and Grayce Selig '11 paced the men's and women's cross country teams to top-eight finishes at the 42nd annual University of Albany Invitational last Saturday.

The men's team came in second in a field of 22 men's teams, and the women's team finished eighth out of 24 women's teams.

Competing in the last meet before the Nov. 1 University Athletic Association Championships, the men's team finished second behind Division I Marist with 91 points, beating several Division I teams as well as the University of St. Thomas, the No. 32-ranked Division III team.

The Judges placed five runners in the top 25, led by Kerwin Vega '11, who finished the eight-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 26.7 seconds, good for 13th place overall and third among Division III competitors. Captain Mike Stone '09, who finished just .9 seconds behind Vega, said he was pleased with Vega's effort.

"I was really happy for him to be out in front," Stone said. "Also, when we crossed the finish line, I looked back and we had a bunch of other guys there [finishing the race]."

Vega was happy about his performance, especially because he had been injured for almost a year before this race.

"I missed all of [the] indoor and outdoor season," Vega said. "I was very nervous going into [this race]. All I expected to do was run what I could, but it all worked out pretty well, and I just ran the best I could."

Stone was also happy with his own performance.

"I ran the race evenly, a bunch of guys did, and I caught probably about half a dozen people in the last mile," he said.

Marc Boutin '12 was third on the team with a time of 25:35.9, good for 17th place. Chris Brown '12 finished in 22nd place, and Zach Schwartz '11 rounded out the top-five Brandeis finishers, taking 25th overall.

The No. 32-ranked women's team placed five runners in the top 65, including three rookies, and finished in eighth place.
