Cowboys may be at home on the range, but their button-down shirts are well-suited to any location this season. Western-inspired plaid tops are the go-to look for the colder months, as these shirts make a bold, playful, functional layer that compliments almost any look. A bright pop of plaid layered between a peacoat and a cute tee is a great, functional way to participate in the trend.
While vintage and consignment stores are great places to find these shirts (and hey, who doesn't love saying they are wearing vintage clothing?), lots of stores are embracing the trend and putting some great options on the rack. L.L. Bean's Camden shirt ($40) in tartan comes in three very flattering colors and has a feminine ruffled bib detail that gives it versatility; when paired with black pants and jacket, for instance, it makes for a professional look.
For those not willing to schlep to L.L. Bean's famous Maine outlet (or those who disdain catalogue shopping), there are many stores just down Route 30 at the Natick Collection that carry similar styles. Forever 21, every girl's guilty pleasure, is carrying the 3Q Western Plaid shirt for only $20. The colors in this shirt are a bit muted and would do much better with brighter layers; however, the V-neck elongates the figure and, therefore, is flattering on essentially everyone.
And boys, this trend is not just for the ladies. Plaid can be worn almost the same way by men-that is, over a Hanes V-neck and under a nice wool coat. Add a pair of dark denim jeans, and you are good to go.
To update last year's sweater dresses or warm up one of your summer dresses, bold tights are the easiest way to go. Opaque jewel tones can add a splash of fun color and playfulness to an otherwise neutral black, grey or brown dress. However, keep in mind which tones look best with your skin, and don't shy away from the brightest tones; this could be a really fun trend that could add some excitement to the cold months ahead.
