Kaitlin Oldfield '12 controls the soccer ball during last Sunday's game against University Athletic Association foe Carnegie Mellon University. Playing in the last regular-season home matchup, the Judges tied the Tartans 0-0.

Already down four starters, including starting goalie Hillary Rosenzweig '10, due to injury or illness, the women's soccer team faced yet another obstacle as backup goalie Jaclyn Weinstein '12 had to leave the team's game against Carnegie Mellon University last Sunday late in regulation. The Judges called upon their third-string goalie, Elyse Phillips '12, who appeared in her first collegiate game.

Despite these shortcomings, the Judges were able to hold on and force a scoreless tie after two overtimes. Brandeis is now 9-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the University Athletic Association, including a 3-1 loss to Emory University last Friday night.

"We have so many injuries," defender Abby Shields '10 said. "A lot of our-you could say-'star players' were not on the field today, and I think we worked really hard despite that. The people that came in for those players stepped up really hard and did a great job today."

The Judges played without Rosenzweig, defender Allison Maresca '12, midfielder Ruth Orbach '11 and forward Melissa Gorenkoff '10. To deal with the absences, coach Denise Dallamora changed the team's formation, using four defenders, four midfielders and just two forwards. Dallamora said the team had mainly played with four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards this season.

Brandeis outshot the Tartans 7-5 in the first half. The Judges' best scoring opportunities came in the 18th minute, when Tartan sophomore goalie Anya Rosen saved shots from forwards Tiffany Pacheco '11 and Izabella Miranda '12.

The Judges also had two more shots on goal late in the half, but Rosen again saved Pacheco's and Miranda's shots.

The Judges were outshot 15-11 over the next three periods, including 11-7 in the second half. Making just her second collegiate start, Weinstein collected six saves in the second half before colliding with a Carnegie player with 13 seconds left in regulation. Phillips came in for the rest of the game and made two more saves to preserve the tie.
