The weather outside may be frightful, but there is no respite for the trendy! Along with bare trees and freezing temperatures, winter means that it's time to start looking for a new coat and accessories to boot.
This season's most fashionable outerwear is exciting and has a great retro feel. Winter is all about the bomber jacket, which provides a silhouette that is great for layering. Undoubtedly, this warmth-providing aspect will come in handy, since December will be upon us in no time.
In an e-mail to the Justice, Fashion Institute of Technology grad, professional stylist and Brandeis Class of 2004 alumna Lindsay Weiner writes: "Because the new bomber jacket comes in a variety of colors and fabrics, it can be quite versatile. Matching it with pants or jeans is a [sportier] look, while wearing it over a dress or skirt makes a feminine look more edgy."
Since the bomber is such a trendy piece, there are an overwhelming number of purchasing options at a variety of prices. The fiercest and most classic bomber option is leather-it evokes fighter pilot-esque coolness but will cost you a pretty penny. Leather, though, is a classic material, and much more of an investment piece.
As far as leather bomber jackets go, Identify's Hoodie Leather Jacket (Bloomingdales, $490) is a great option; it is relatively simple, lending itself to years of use, and has a hood for extra warmth.
Leather is not the only option; Urban Outfitters is carrying the BDG Wool Bomber Jacket ($138), which comes in olive and black. At a much more reasonable price, this jacket has a zip front covered by snaps, giving it a retro feel.
Weiner also indicates that swing coats (jackets that are typically more structured at the shoulder and bust and "swing" outward at the middle section and hips) are going to be a popular silhouette this winter. She credits this trendy look to the popularity of the show Mad Men. While swing coats are typically great for spring, many designers are making them in wool for the colder months.
