Both captains on the men's and women's swimming and diving teams said the varsity program will continue for the 2009 to 2010 season, but the University has yet to publically announce a decision on the future of the program beyond this season.

Mike Rubin '09, captain of the men's swimming team, and Rachel Nadas '09, captain of the women's team, told the Justice that Brandeis administrators met with them to relay that the program will continue for another season. Rubin and Nadas also said that an e-mail was sent to the whole team informing them of the decision.

"We definitely have a team next year for the entire swim season for 2009 to 2010," Rubin said. "We were guaranteed that by the Brandeis administration."

"We were told that the team would definitely be returning for the 2009-2010 academic year, and beyond that is what we're not sure about," Nadas said.

The team is currently practicing at Bentley College and Regis College following the Oct. 28 closing of the Linsey pool due to malfunctioning heating systems.

Vice President for Communications Lorna Miles wrote in an e-mail to the Justice, "My understanding is that arrangements have been made to continue under the currrent arrangements through the end of next year." Director of Athletics Sheryl Sousa '91 could not be reached for comment.

Aaron LeFland '13, who was recruited by the swimming team and accepted to Brandeis via early decision, wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that head coach James Zotz told him that "there will be a team next year," but LeFland wrote, "I have not heard anything about long-term plans for the swimming program."

Zotz, who coaches both the men's and women's teams, said he would continue to advocate for the continuation of the program beyond the end of the 2009 to 2010 season, and he said the administration has been receptive to his advocacy.

"I will fight for this team, via the alumni, via anybody," Zotz said. But "it will not be a fight against anybody," he added.
